26 Golden Plate awards to local eateries

Golden Plate Awarded to Dad's Drive Up Diner 8617 E. Florentine, Prescott Valley, AZ 928-775-4250

Winners 2007 - 2008

Wednesday, February 27, 2008

It's not a red carpet affair like the Golden Globes, but 179 food establishments out of over 750 eligible establishments across the County have earned Golden Plate Awards from Yavapai County Community Health Services (YCCHS). Twenty-six of those are in the Prescott Valley area.

The Golden Plate Award, now in its third year, has recognized a growing number of food establishments for operating practices that demonstrate an exceptionally strong commitment to food safety.

Only 106 food establishments met the criteria for the award this past year, but that was nearly double from the 61 food establishments that earned the award for their operating practices in 2005.r training.
YCCHS, together with the Yavapai County Food Safety Industry Council and the University of Arizona's Cooperative Extension office, developed three criteria for award recipients:
1. Operate the entire calendar year without a cited critical violation on an inspection,

2. Safeguard their customers by implementing a YCCHS-approved food safety plan, and

3. Have a manager or person-in-charge who has earned an advanced food safety certificate.
Managers and food handlers at area restaurants, schools and other food establishments routinely take steps to serve great food and at the same time, comply with health code standards. This award honors those that go above and beyond the food code requirements.

Critical violations often involve employee hygiene and food temperatures. Health inspectors will document violations when they find employees who fail to wash hands when necessary, or when food is not maintained at proper hot and cold temperatures during food preparation or storage.

For the entire list of 2007 Golden Plate Award recipients, go to www.co.yavapai.az.us and click on Health Services.

Residents can see inspection reports in person when they visit the Environmental Health offices at YCCHS health centers in Prescott, Prescott Valley and Cottonwood.

Call 928-771-3149 for any questions related to food safety or regularly offered food handler training.
